The Beijing Office was formally set up under the Basic Law of the HKSAR on 4 March 1999. Its main functions include further enhancing liaison and communication between the HKSARGovernment and the Central People's Government (CPG) and other Mainland authorities, promoting Hong Kong in the Mainland, processing applications for entry to Hong Kong, in accordance with  approved immigration policies and procedures and  providing practical assistance to Hong Kong residents in distress in the Mainland.
