Seminar on Co-production of Films between Hong Kong and the Mainland

Date: 21 July 2018
Venue: Broadway Cinematheque, Beijing
Organiser(s): Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing and Broadway Cinematheque

The Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing and Broadway Cinematheque jointly presented the 7th Hong Kong Thematic Film Festival with the aim of promoting contemporary Hong Kong film culture in various Mainland cities and fostering closer exchange between the Hong Kong and Mainland film industry. To mark the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, a seminar was specially held during the festival period with film industry veterans from Hong Kong and the Mainland (Reeve Wong, Peter Pau, Song Dai, Eric Lin and Shan Tam) invited as panelists to review the history and environmental changes in the co-production of films between the two places, and to explore strategies and opportunities on film co-production in the future.

The panel recounted the history of co-operation between Hong Kong and Mainland film production companies since the 1960s, which first took the form of “co-operated production” or “assisted production”. Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policies of the country in 1978, more and more Hong Kong filmmakers had participated in the development and reform of the Mainland’s film industry. The Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) implemented in 2004 further opened up the Mainland market for the Hong Kong film industry through “co-production” arrangements, and movies co-produced by the two places had since flourished. The panelists noted that the development of the Hong Kong and Mainland film industry was closely related to the country’s reform and opening-up, and as filmmakers of the two places continue to influence each other, they aspired that the country would undergo an even larger transformation in the next 40 years of reform and opening-up, and that the film industry in Hong Kong and the Mainland would continue to prosper.
